Steelmaking is a process of selective oxidation of impurities, which is the reverse of ironmaking. In principle, it is similar to the fire refining of nonferrous metals but the end product is an alloy, not a pure metal. However, the process of conversion of pig iron/sponge iron into steel is a complex process.
